Undergraduate study

We offer courses in a wide range of languages which can be studied in a number of different kinds of degree. All programmes last four years, with the third year spent studying abroad. You can concentrate on a single language, or combine language study with some other subject.

Study of one Language

If you study Single Honours you will concentrate on one subject for all four years. In your first two years you will also take one module chosen (when you arrive) from a wide range across the University, but apart from that your studies will be devoted to a single subject. For combinations of two languages weighted equally see BA Modern Languages.

Study of two or more languages

The BA Modern Languages programme involves the study of either two or three modern languages in various weightings, each being either one third, one half, or two thirds of your total load. These weightings may vary from year to year.

Study of a language with another (non-language) subject

In the Joint Honours programme you will study one modern language equally weighted with another subject that is not a modern language. For combinations of two languages equally weighted see BA Modern Languages.

Major/Minor combinations

If you study a Modern Language as a Major this will be weighted as two-thirds of your programme. The other third will be chosen from a range of non-language subjects. For combinations of two languages weighted two-thirds and one third see BA Modern Languages.
